About Us

Family & Children’s Counseling Services is both a new agency and one with a rich history. The organization was established in 2020 through the merger of Family Counseling Services of Cortland County and The Family & Children’s Society based in Broome County.  Together, the two legacy organizations have over 130 years of experience serving people in Central New York and the Southern Tier.  The strategic alliance of the two agencies has allowed for the expansion of services and assures ongoing availability of essential behavioral health services for members of the communities we serve.

We use an integrated outpatient services (IOS) model to ensure that there is “no wrong door” for people to access treatment. Mental health and substance use services are available for youth, adults and families who are experiencing emotional, personal, and alcohol or drug-related problems.

Our counselors and medical staff are ready to support a path to recovery, including medication assisted treatment if that is recommended. Services are available at multiple locations in Broome, Cortland, Madison and Tioga counties, and through our school-based counseling programs and mobile outreach.

The Journey Project, based in Broome County, provides services for children and adult survivors of sexual abuse as well as children with problematic sexual behaviors. Treatment is also available for adolescent and adult offenders.

Care management and other supports are available including Health Homes, Family Homes for the Elderly, CHAMP, navigation services and .employment assistance through our Vocational Incentives Program.

Our Cortland Prevention Resources program offers prevention education and services, after-school programs, mentoring and other activities for youth, adults, families, professionals and educators. The Cortland LGBTQ Center is located at our Cortland office and offers information, resources and social activities for members of the LGBTQ+ community and their allies.

Family & Children’s Counseling Services serves over 10,000 people each year and employs over 130 professional staff who have diverse training and experience and are committed to providing the care and counseling that serves to strengthen and support individuals and healthy relationships.
