Chalk the Walk for Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

Publish Date: September 20, 2023

FCCS staff from across our sites participated in “Chalk the Walk” to recognize September as Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. Staff wrote supportive messages and drew images of hope and resilience to brighten someone’s day and show support for those who may be struggling with mental health issues. Chalk the Walk helps to raise awareness and normalize conversations surrounding mental health and wellness as a community-wide suicide prevention awareness initiative.

Suicide Prevention Awareness Month is a time to remember the lives lost to suicide, the millions who have struggled with suicidal thoughts and the individuals, families, and communities that have been impacted. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2021 there were 48,183 people who died by suicide in the United States and 1.7 million people attempted suicide. That is 1 death every 11 minutes. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among youth and young adults between the ages of 10 and 24 years old.

Educate yourself and others about suicide prevention: Learn the warning signs and risk factors for suicide, how to support someone considering suicide, and familiarize yourself with the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
