Is Group Counseling for Me?

Publish Date: October 17, 2023

Many people are familiar with individual counseling but group counseling is another option that can be even more effective than individual therapy by providing stigma reduction and the camaraderie from others who have similar challenges.

Family and Children’s Counseling Services offers a variety of group services that may align with your personal treatment goals. Clinical benefits of group services include:

  • Camaraderie – One of the most important benefits is learning that there are others like you suffering from the same thing.
  • Confidence – Having the camaraderie, fellowship and support of group members provide a type of safety net that builds confidence.
  • Different Perspectives – Group therapy can involve input from a variety of perspectives.
  • Self-Discovery – All of us have blind spots about ourselves, some of which may hold us back from effectively addressing those things that may be at the root of our problems.
  • Accountability – other group members can/will in a supportive way ask for you to share about actions steps that you committed to taking.
  • Safe Space – confidential space to discuss treatment goals, to practice new skills, and to allow yourself to be vulnerable.

Groups are held weekly! If interested, ask your counselor how you can incorporate group sessions into your treatment plan.

Current Group topics offered at FCCS include:

  • Dual Diagnosis/Co-occurring
