Rapid Opioid Assistance in Recovery
Rapid Opioid Assistance in Recovery (ROAR) is our new Low Threshold Buprenorphine program serving Cortland, Madison and Broome counties. Buprenorphine is a safe and effective treatment for opioid use disorder, but only a fraction of New Yorkers who would benefit from this treatment receive it.
Low-threshold services are guided by the following principles:
- Same-day treatment entry
- Harm reduction approach
- Flexibility in prescribing
- Wide availability in places where people with opioid use disorder are located
What is ROAR?
ROAR, a division of the Outreach and Engagement Team, is a low-threshold buprenorphine initiative providing same-day access to medication-assisted treatment and supports. ROAR connects individuals with opioid addiction to necessary support, emphasizing the significance of accessible and flexible approaches to recovery. The goal of this program is to accommodate individuals’ unique needs and encourage their engagement in the recovery process using a harm reduction model. Individuals are connected to a primary counselor to establish recovery goals, a peer to work through barriers to recovery, a medication provider for ongoing MAT support, and a Nurse Practitioner as needed to address mental health needs.
ROAR services in Cortland, Madison and Broome counties include:
- Same-day access to medication-assisted treatment and recovery supports
- Peer engagement
- Counseling
- Mobile outreach
- Telehealth screenings
- Transportation
- Harm reduction strategies and supplies
- Patient education
- Care management and treatment referrals
SAME DAY ACCESS TO MEDICATION ASSISTED TREATMENT (MAT)
The ROAR team is able to provide same day focused assessments to those seeking MAT. Individuals who are appropriate for medication induction will then meet with a prescriber to begin treatment. Appropriate referrals will be made for individuals whose needs cannot be met in this program.
THE LOW THRESHOLD MODEL
The ROAR program is designed to meet clients where they are at. People will be seen based on individual needs and barriers to treatment and are expected to meet with their care team at least monthly. Our team will work with individuals to explore and address a variety of issues potentially impacted by addiction including medical, housing, financial, employment, legal and others. Our team will also coordinate care with other substance abuse treatment providers to ensure a comprehensive continuum of care.
COUNSELING AND SUPPORT
Individuals will work with their counselor to address their needs associated with opiate use disorder. Each person will have an individualized treatment plan based on their specific needs. Our skilled team is prepared to help individuals work through the challenges of addiction and early recovery.
PEER ENGAGEMENT
Our Certified Recovery Peer Advocates (CRPAs) provide support to help reduce barriers to treatment. Peer Advocates utilize their own recovery experience and stories to inspire, connect and support individuals who are struggling with addiction and in recovery from an opioid use disorder.
HARM REDUCTION
Our team will meet those who use opiates “where they are at,” and address conditions of use to reduce the negative consequences of risky behaviors – including the overall harmful effects of substance use. Narcan is provided to all individuals and harm reduction kits are available upon request.
